This talk looks at late 19th and early 20th century productions of Wagnerian opera in Australia, chiefly in Melbourne.

It focuses on Thomas Quinlan’s British Empire Touring Company’s performances of Wagner in 1912 and 1913, and the reception of Quinlan’s English-language Ring Cycle in 1913.


Professor Kerry Murphy is head of musicology at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne.  Her research interests include 19th-century French music and music criticism, and colonial Australian music history, and she has published widely in these areas.  Kerry is currently researching the impact of travelling virtuosi to Australia and North America, as well as Louise Hanson Dyer as transnational patron of the arts.
